A disturbing case has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district, where two minor boys, aged 10 and 12, have been accused of raping a nine-year-old girl in a village. The incident has shocked many, especially because of the young age of the accused and has sparked conversations online about responsibility and the influence of upbringing after former Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi shared a post about it on social media.

According to police, the incident took place on March 6 at around 2 PM. The boys allegedly lured the girl to a field by offering her berries.

Girl Allegedly Lured To Field

The nine-year-old girl, a Class 4 student, had reportedly gone to a nearby forested area to collect grass when she encountered the two boys. All three are residents of the same village.

Authorities said the boys allegedly persuaded the girl to accompany her to a nearby field under the pretext of feeding her berries.

Mother Approaches Police After Child Returns Home

After the incident, the girl returned home and informed her mother about what had happened. Her mother then approached the police and filed a complaint.

In the complaint, she alleged that while the 10-year-old boy held the girl’s hands, the 12-year-old carried out the assault.

Kiran Bedi Raises Questions On Parenting

The case drew a reaction from Bedi who raised questions about the role of parents in such situations.

Bedi wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Should the parents of these boys not be booked? Are they not responsible? What kind of parenting? Father and Mother. Giving birth to children ought to come with the responsibility of nurturing them. Should society not get this message? It is this generation later which will remain a threat and fill the prisons and the courts."

She further wrote, “Instead of nurturing boys, parents control girls for their mobility and growth to protect and secure them. But in the process, they make them dependent and insecure. And boys emboldened, irresponsible and defiant."

“For traffic violations of underage children, parents are held vicariously responsible and are booked. Why not for crimes? We need to fix parental responsibility and make it known," she added.

What Are People Saying Online

Her remarks triggered varied reactions on social media.

One user commented, “Why not book the whole neighbourhood in which the boys grew up? That’s not the solution to the problem. A proper sociological and psychological study needs to be done, based on which the reasons for the rape and sexual assault by boys as young as 10 and 12, must be addressed. Randomly booking people is a police solution to every problem. Common people think differently."

Another said, “The government should remove the protection of juvenile act in cases of rape and murder."

“To an extent, I do agree with you. But we are living in crazy times. The outer influence on them at times exceeds the influence of family values," someone else wrote.

“That’s why I keep saying ban porn and social media for children and some teens… It’s not even that difficult to completely block a country from accessing these sites," an individual stated.

Police Action Against The Boys

According to The Times Of India (TOI), the Station House Officer of the local police station said that a case has been registered against the two named juveniles under Section 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for gang rape and Sections 5 and 6 of the POCSO Act, which deal with aggravated penetrative sexual assault.

The officer added that the girl has undergone a medical examination as part of the investigation. Both accused were detained late Saturday evening, March 7, and later produced before a magistrate who sent them to a juvenile home in Hathras.
