The research involved 54 participants who were asked to complete essay-writing assignments over several months. Participants were divided into groups that used AI tools, search engines or no digital assistance while completing the tasks.
Researchers monitored participants’ brain activity during the exercises and later assessed their ability to recall the content they had written. According to the findings, individuals who relied heavily on AI tools showed lower levels of neural engagement during the writing process.
The study also found that these participants demonstrated weaker memory recall of the content compared with those who wrote essays independently or used search engines to gather information.
